"You Give Love a Bad Name", bientôt 30 ans

Their third album ‘Slippery When Wet’ had already been to No. 1 and turned platinum, but November 29, 1986 was the day when Bon Jovi were sitting pretty at the top of the US singles chart for the first time. ‘You Give Love A Bad Name’ climbed 4-1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the first of their series of stadium-filling anthems was America’s favourite song.

The song was the product of the New Jersey band’s fruitful relationship with writer Desmond Child, with whom they collaborated on a total of four tracks from the ‘Slippery When Wet’ album. They also included the equally anthemic follow-up ‘Livin’ On A Prayer,’ which gave them another US No. 1 just 11 weeks later.

As the band raced into the top flight of worldwide rock attractions and the album rose to current reported worldwide sales of 25 million, the other new ingredient in their success was Canadian producer Bruce Fairbairn. He helmed ‘Slippery’ and the ‘New Jersey’ sequel of 1988, and was also at the desk for multi-million-selling albums by Aerosmith and AC/DC. He died suddenly in 1999, at the age of just 49.

While ‘You Give Love’ and ‘Prayer’ were making the New Jersey five-piece one of the hottest singles acts of the 1986-87 season, Jon Bon Jovi was telling Spin magazine that his favourite singers included Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Freddie Mercury and Eric Burdon. He was also reflecting on the band’s progress as a live attraction around the world.

“After four years and three albums every place has sort of equalled out,” he said. “Now our audiences in Europe are pretty much half male and half female. In the States it was more female, now it’s half and half. It took a while because in the beginning people didn’t know what the hell Bon Jovi was. They didn’t know if we were a jeans commercial or a pizza parlour.”

Bon Jovi have been part of the rock landscape for so long, it’s hard to remember a time when they weren’t yet world-beaters. But it was 31 years ago on this very day, January 21, 1984, that they released their first, self-titled album on the Mercury label.

‘Bon Jovi’ was produced by Lance Quinn and Tony Bongiovi, who was not only the brother of Jon Bon Jovi, but worked at the Power Station studio in New York, where the album was recorded. It was a showcase for a hungry young five-piece in a hurry to go places. The material was almost entirely co-written by Bon Jovi himself with various collaborators, including lead guitarist Richie Sambora on four numbers.

The exception, and the only time that the band have ever recorded anything by an “outsider” on a studio record, was ‘She Don’t Know Me,’ by Mark Avsec. He was a member of Donnie Iris and the Cruisers, themselves a chart act in America in the first half of the 1980s, notably with fine singles like ‘Ah! Leah!’ and ‘My Girl.’

The Bon Jovi album also featured contributions from such notables as unofficial band bassist Hugh McDonald, Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band drummer Roy Bittan and Canadian guitarist Aldo Nova, who had scored a top 30 US hit of his own in 1982 with ‘Fantasy.’

‘Bon Jovi’ made it to No. 43 on the Billboard 200, with one single that crept inside the top 40, the No. 39 hit ‘Runaway.’ After the band’s big breakthrough, it would eventually be certified double platinum in the US. Meanwhile, there would be more baby steps with the follow-up album ‘7800° Fahrenheit,’ and then Bon Jovi began to conquer the world.

En effet, le tatoueur a entaché la devise "It’s my life" d’une vilaine coquille : "It’s is My Life".

Bon Jovi To Tour On 2015 With Richie Sambora? Fans Rejoice For Reunion Of Band On Stage

By Nate Mardukas | November 18, 2014 09:57 PM EST

One good cause had Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora reconcile. Who would have thought that the recent Ice Bucket Challenge awareness would possibly give Bon Jovi fans a glimpse of the past in the future with a reunion of the two former bandmates?

In the recent trend, frontman of the band challenged the former guitarist to do the challenge that was accepted, reportedly made it the first time since the "break up" for the two men to talk to each other (somehow) again.

Watch the video here.

Guitarist Richie Sambora quit the band on 2013 after getting a decision to continue with the tour last year or leave.

"The Bon Jovi machine had to go on. I could choose - join or leave. That's hard when you share joys and sorrows for 30 years."

A rift between him and front man Jon Bon Jovi was the reason for his departure and making things meet with the vocalist is also the reason he is coming back.

"There's no bad blood with me any more. I love Jon, and I still see the possibility of a return," Sambora told Life magazine. "There are just a few steps I want to - need to - take."

Sambora, after leaving the band, went on to venture and explore his own musical path and took a stroll with his solo project as he is currently touring Europe.

"I wanted to make my own music and I preferred doing a few shows with my own band. I said I wanted a break," Sambora says.

"It's hurt me that more and more untrue things have come out in the media. I just wanted calmer waters, and just do something for myself," he says. "We had just finished with another tour... (and) I saw a year of other priorities for me."

Sambora might be thinking really hard about going back with the band he co-founded with Jon Bon Jovi but as time goes by, his priorities seemed to change and his focus on his family needed more attention.

"We were the hardest working band in the world, man," he tells The Hollywood Reporter. "You're talking 24/7, and you don't get to come home. I missed so much of my child's life. And you get to that place where you realize, 'Oh my God, this is really important.'"
